Associated Black Charities (ABC), a non-profit ogranization that funds a litany of programs and organizations for Maryland African-American communities, hosted a book signing for CNN anchor and special correspondent Soledad O'Brien. The media veteran and popular reporter of the Black in America series spoke on her new book The Next Big Story.

Black Male Identity Project Launch

Arts on Purpose, a non-profit community arts organization,held a press conference for the official launch of the "Black Male Identity Project" (BMI) on March 24th. BMI is an initiative to combat negative stereotypes of African-American males. The BMI will offer a series of workshops, performances, celebrations and exhibitions featuring positive imagery and stories focused on black men. Prominent community leaders spoke at the event including US Congressman Elijah Cummings, Urban Leadership Institute co-founder LaMarr Darnell Shields and Center for Urban Families founder Joe Jones.

The Greater Washington Urban League presented the 39th Annual Whitney M. Young Jr. Memorial Gala on March 16th. Honorees included Washington, D.C. Mayor Vincent Gray and City Council Chair Kwame Brown. Award recipients included Howard University President Sidney Ribeau, Assistant vice president of Government, International and Community Relations George Washington University Michael Akin, and Sonia Gutierrez, founder and CEO of Carlos Rosario International Public Charter School.

Actor Charles S. Dutton hosted a master class for Duke Ellington School of the Arts and US Dream Academy students. Dutton will star in the stageplay "From Jail to Yale" at the John F. Kennedy Center on March 28th & 29. Proceeds from show will go to US Dream Academy.

Baltimore Homeownership Preservation Coalition(BHPC), a large group of non-profits, governmental and and professional entities, partnered up with non-profit legal group, Public Justice Center to announce new efforts to protect the rights of renters during foreclosure.
