One-on-One with Melissa Haizlip






With a diverse background in theatre, TV, and film, Melissa Haizlip has worked as casting director for the international thriller “40”, which premiered at the Toronto Film Festival 2010. Haizlip now debuts Mr. Soul” Ellis Haizlip and the Birth of Black Power TV. Released from her independent film production company, Shoes in the Bed Productions,this film is about the pioneering all-black variety show, Soul! and the man who made it happen.

Hosted and Produced by her uncle, Ellis Haizlip, Soul! was a program like no other, showcasing black culture, politics, and the arts. The Emmy-award winning show premiered on WNET public television in 1968 and aired until 1973. During its broadcast, Soul! featured prominent figures in black America including Amiri Baraka, Louis Farrakhan and Stevie Wonder.

Melissa’s film Mr. Soul” Ellis Haizlip and the Birth of Black Power TV will be screened at Howard University Thursday, 9/22 and at the CBCF (Congressional Black Caucus Foundation) Annual Legislative Conference third annual independent film series on Saturday, 9/24.
